Ladder Riders I

Description

The Ladder that these people are riding on might have originally been inanimate, but it has come to life and is running along by alternately jumping between its hands and feet. This causes an energetic lolloping action, as it curves and flexes its long ladder back, and the riders have to adjust themselves in order to balance on each step of the stride. As the ladder rears up on its hind feet the riders have to sit up, and as it plunges forwards onto its hands the riders must lean backwards. The rider at the front of Ladder I is pointing in front of her, to proclaim the way forward, and the second rider is now standing upright as the ladder drops away beneath her. They all seem quite happy with their activity, and the riders are carrying it off with style. It is unclear what the ladder thinks about it all. This sculpture is made of a beautiful translucent British eco-resin, which allows for interesting glimpses through to the armature, or internal structure of the sculpture, and is mounted on a clear, flat acrylic base. It is 23cm long by 25cm tall and 10cm wide including the base, and is one of a limited edition of 24. The sculpture is initialled on the inside of the ladder’s left wrist, and comes with a signed letter of authentication, stating its edition number. It is the right size to sit on our desk, shelves or mantlepiece and look as if it is travelling across its own landscape there. Although the sculpture looks delicate, it actually much more robust than it appears, as well as being lightweight, and can withstand small knocks and movements in the home. I package it in a sturdy cardboard box, and it travels very well by courier. Ladder Riders I is one of a pair of sculptures, with Ladder Riders II, and they run along together. See further listings for the other sculpture.
