Matt Licari was born in Manhattan, grew up in the Bronx, and spent several summers in Maine. He has traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally, and exhibits pictures made abroad in company with pictures made in America. His work explores urban, suburban, and rural subjects with an approach similar to that of a street photographer. He works primarily with a large-format view-camera, but occasionally employs handheld cameras. Licari has been working on a series of photographs based on the Bronx for the last 6 years. He is also currently working on a project addressing his recent relocation to Virginia, extended family and the dying process. Licari received his BFA in photography from the School of Art + Design at SUNY Purchase in New York. He has worked as an archivist intern for the Guggenheim Museum and the Richard Avedon Foundation, worked with numerous artists and photographers, taught photography for several years, and worked as a lab technician, printer and retoucher. In 2009, Licari founded The Flood Collective, a group of 8 American lens-based artists. Licari has exhibited in many venues, including Sasha Wolf Gallery, Kris Graves Projects, and The Neuberger Museum of Art. His work has been shown in the company of numerous artists, including Fred Stein, Matthew Pillsbury and Lois Conner. Licari's work was recently sold in an auction through Daniel Cooney Fine Art. He was an exhibitor in the 2011 Artist Project New York and his work received critical acclaim. Matt Licari is available for editorial, fashion and commercial assignments, and offers high end photographic printing, scanning and retouching services. He currently lives and works in Richmond, Virginia and New York City.
