MOURNING JEWELRY - necklace
USD$50.00
Description
Jewelry is never neutral; it is always a sign, a carrier of meaning to be read, expressing one’s social situation and identity.
On a private level, jewelry can function as a memento—a reminder of a person, a place, or an occurrence in life. Sometimes these memories are happy, sometime they are sad—emotional qualities discernible in the object itself.
During the nineteenth century black jewelry, serving as a reminder of a lost person and one’s own mortality, became popular. The style was heavily influenced by concurrent fashion and architecture featuring symmetrical and geometric shapes.
MOURNING JEWELRY is a series of rubber necklaces inspired by the black jewelry of the Victorian Era. In their simple and abstract form they are contemporary reinterpretations.
